e-m@son web ring sample code

Contained below is the correct code snippet that is required to be in place for the e-m@son web ring to operate on your site. It is the same code that is emailed to each applicant on receipt of a registration in the ring database.

There are a couple of comments that are required for you to properly use this clip.

We have made it a gif file so that it can get past all of the new AOL email stuff that removes the executable code from emails. This is the largest single reason for code to be inserted into sites and not be functional. The file is small and can be opened by virtually any graphics program (Paintbrush, Corel, Photo Paint, etc.)

The second reason for non-functional controls is the use of Front Page and some other editors, which do not permit the code to be inserted cleanly. This is usually typified by the code being displayed on your page instead of the controls. Use this code to check your source file and make sure all is well. It is reported that if you copy and paste the code into a trext editor (such as Note Pad) and then save it as a text file, it will properly insert into Front Page. We don't use Front Page so I cannot swear to this.

Now the comments.

It is imperative that you change the six places that have XXXX in the gif to the ID number supplied with your application. You must use your own ID number. If you do not have the ID, write to Brother Warren at this address and give us your URL. We will respond (usually within 48 hours) with the ID and answer any other questions we can that will assist you in the installation. Also, at the end of the code in the place marked "YOUR_EMAIL_ADDRESS_GOES_HERE", place your web site email address and in "YOUR_NAME_GOES_HERE" drop the name of your webmaster. These are filled in for you automatically on the email you received.

Technically, where the $::ringtitle prompt appears, it should say "e-m@son control" in the event that the graphics fail. This is optional.

To copy the code snip, right click on the graphic (anywhere in the code box) or use whatever other mechanism is in your browser to save the gif. It can be played out (and printed) from any standard paint or graphic program (Paintbrush, CorelDraw, Photostyler, etc.)

You may also redesign (or remove) the graphic element and replace it with a table or your own graphics. We do like seeing the logo, but as long as the panel is clearly identified as the control for the e-m@son web ring, it is acceptable. Many fine "custom panels" exist in the 1300 member sites.

You may also feel free to place the panel on a page other than the first page of your site. However, it is important that the path to that page be clearly marked with a "Ring Page" or "Links and Rings" button so that travellers do not get lost. Also, on your site profile (the form you submitted to enter the ring), in the space marked "HTML code URL" please put the exact URL of where the control panel appears so that we can find it. There is no restriction other than that it must be clearly marked from the place where the visitor lands to where the control panel appears.

If you have a black background, the buttons are black on a transparent backing. You can color the table to make them show, or if you add a b_ in front of the six gifs (ie next.gif becomes b_next.gif) it will make the buttons white on transparent.

Unfortunately, due to the wide variety of editors, browsers and ISPs, we are sometimes not able to offer specific operating instructions for your coding tool. However, we will work with you and test as often as you like. We do enjoy the emails.
